A little information about search engines

A search engine is essentially an online directory of every web page on the internet today. Google, Bing, Canoe are just a few examples. A person can use a search engine to look up information on any topic they desire. They type a "keyphrase" into the search engine, and the search engine delivers a comprehensive list of every web page that has information about that topic, in order of most relevent to least.

In order for the search engine to return accurate results, it has to understand exactly what's on every single web page. How does it accomplish this?

Search engines use programs, also known as "spiders", that continuously crawl through (or read) web pages. Once they've read a web page, they report back to the search engine and document what information they found. This gathering of web page information is called "indexing". In general, web pages are "indexed" approximately once every two weeks.

In order for a web page to be indexed properly, the spider must be able to understand exacty what the page is about. Making sure this happens properly on your web site is both a science and an art! There are dozens of factors, some more technical than others, that if done properly will ensure search engine spiders have no problem indexing your web pages. We call these sites "optimized".
